The Class of 78, Adolescents to Grandparents
The class of September 1973, admitted with anticipation and eagerness, marked an exceptional chapter in academic history of the school. Graduating in June 1978, this cohort distinguished itself with an
outstanding academic performance, with a multitude of them achieving success with flying colours at graduation. They managed all these while also excelling in sports particularly athletics and football
where they were state champions on multiple occasions.
As they embarked on diverse paths post-graduation, a significant portion of this class chose the route of higher education, with a notable presence in the fields of medicine, engineering, and accountancy.
Today, more than a fifth of the class stands as accomplished doctors, contributing to the healthcare landscape. The group of achievers also boasts a considerable number of engineers and accountants, showcasing their versatility and expertise in various professional domains. Remarkably, a substantial
portion of the class pursued advanced degrees, exemplifying their commitment to continuous learning and intellectual growth. Among them, a noteworthy contingent has ascended to the position of
professors, imparting knowledge and shaping future generations.
Not limited to traditional professions, those who ventured into the realm of business have thrived, attaining success and recognition. Their achievements stand as a testament to the comprehensive
education and skills instilled during their formative years. In essence, the class of September 1973 not only excelled academically but also carved diverse and impactful paths in their respective fields. Their accomplishments, ranging from medical practice to academic leadership and entrepreneurial success, underscore the enduring legacy of a class that began its journey decades ago.
The group of adolescents of September 1973, that for many of them, had never travelled furthest than the distance from Lagos to Ikenne or Ibadan to Ikenne, are now strewn all over the globe. As far away as Australia and New Zealand, Brazil and a large number in the UK and even larger number in the USA. The beauty of it all is that they are still very much in contact as the world is now a global village. At every opportunity they gather together to socialise and celebrate or mourn with each other as the case may be. The bonds formed back then still very strong.
Today, several of them are retirees with grandchildren with strong work ethics and a commitment to the values passed down to them through their experiences. Their dedication reflects the enduring impact of teachings received at Mayflower under Dr Tai Solarin and his successor Mr T F Odubanjo.
